In a randomized, double-blind study involving 20 men and women with no reported sleep disturbances, participants consumed either 2 servings of Montmorency tart cherry juice concentrate or a placebo beverage for 7 days. The tart cherry group slept about 40 minutes longer on average and saw up to a 6% increase in sleep efficiency compared to the placebo group. An increase in circulating blood melatonin levels was also observed.

Insomnia

A pilot study involving 15 older adults with chronic insomnia found significant improvements in the Insomnia Severity Index and a 62-minute improvement in wake time after sleep onset. Participants consumed two 8-ounce servings of Montmorency tart cherry juice daily for 2 weeks. Significant improvements were reported on all self-reported sleep variables compared to a placebo drink.
